Locksmith Language

In any trade you can find yourself being baffled by the different terminology used by different people.

This is our glossary - find out exactly what means what!

BATHROOM DOOR LOCK - A type of Mortice lock featuring a thumbturn facility which is used to lock the door from inside.

CYLINDER LOCK - A cylinder lock is a lock constructed with a cylinder that a locksmith can easily unscrew to facilitate rekeying. The cylinder may contain and variety of locking mechanisms, including the pin tumbler, the wafer tumbler lock and the disc tumbler lock.

DEADBOLT - A locking bolt that cannot be moved into the open position except by rotating the lock cylinder.

DEADLOCK - A key operated Mortice lock that “deadlocks” when operated. It does not have a handle or latch.

DISC TUMBLER LOCK
- The Abloy Disklock or Disc Tumbler lock is a lock composed of slotted rotating detainer discs. A specially cut key rotated these discs like the tumblers of a safe to align the slots, allowing the sidebar to drop into the slots, thus opening the lock. Unlike a wafer tumbler lock or a pin tumbler lock, this mechainsm does not use springs. From a security point of view, the disc tumbler lock cannot be bumped.

DOOR - A door is a movable barrier used to cover an opening.

DOOR CHAIN - Allows the door only to be part-opened to see who is there.

DOOR MECHANISM - A metal strip that runs down the side of a uPVC door or window with either rollers, hooks or mushrooms that lock into a receiver plate on the door frame.

DOOR SECURITY BOLT - A bolt fitted into the door which can only be opened from one side with a splined key.

DOOR VIEWER - Or “spy hole”, lets you see who’s at the door without opening it.

DOUBLE LOCKING NIGHTLATCH
- Offers additional security than a standard Nightlatch as the main lock to it automatically deadlocks. Provides high security, particularly for doors with glass panels.

DUAL SCREWS - Suitable for most sash and sliding windows.

GLAZIER - A construction professional that selects, cuts, installs, replaces and removes all types of glass.

GLASS - A hard, brittle, transparent material.

HANDLES
- A mechanism used to engage a locking mechanism. Usually pushed down or pulled upwards.

KEY- A metal instrument used to open a lock.

LOCKSMITH - A person who can defeat lock systems - an early form of security engineering.

LOCKSMITH EMERGENCY - An immediate risk to your property.

LATCH - A type of door or window fastener.

LEVER - Levers are used in Mortice locks. The more levers, the higher standard of security provided.

LOCK DEVICE - A lock is a mechanical fastening device which may be used on a door, vehicle or container, restricting access to the area or property enclosed. Commonly it can be released using a key or combination.

LOCK BUMPING - Lock bumping is where a instrument is placed inside a pin tumbler lock and the pins are bumped upwards to force the cylinder around.

LOCK PICKING - Lock picking is the art of unlocking a lock by analysing and manipulating the componants of the lock device, without the original key.

MORTICE LOCK - Recommended for all external doors, particularly 5 Lever British Standard which offers high security.

NIGHTLATCH - Suitable for front and back doors, featuring a latch that holds the door shut.

PIN TUMBLER LOCK - Pin tumbler is a lock mechanism that uses pins of varying lengths to prevent the lock from opening without the correct key.

REPLACEMENT CYLINDER
- Simply replaces the centre lock section of a Nightlatch. An easy way to “change to locks”.

RIM LOCK - This is fitted to the surface of a door - often used on shed and garage doors and older/cottage style doors.

SASH JAMMER
- The ideal lock to secure most uPVC casement and transom windows.

SASHLOCK - A “deadlock” with the addition of a latch mechanism, used with a handle.

SECURITY - Security is the degree of protection against danger, criminals and loss.

SNAPLOCK - Another good security option for wooden casement, transom and pivot windows. It automatically “snaps” locked when the window is closed.

SNIB - A button on a Nightlatch that is used to hold the latch back.

SPLINED KEY - A standard key with grooves in it, used with door security bolts.

STAYLOCKS
- Designed to fit through the holes on a casement window catch.

THUMBTURN - A small knob used to operate a bolt.

TUBULAR LATCH - Used with handles and knobs on internal doors.

uPVC - Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride (uPVC)

WINDOW - A transparent opening in a wall (or other solid and opaque surface) that allows a passage of light and, if not closed or sealed, air and sound.

WINDOW LOCKS - Locks specifically designed to secure a wide range of windows.

WAFER TUMBLER LOCK
- A wafer tumbler lock is a type of lock that utilises a set of flat wafers to prevent the lock from opening unless the correct key is inserted. This type of lock is similar to the pin tumbler lock and works on the similar principle. However, unlike the pin tumbler lock, the wafer is a single piece. The wafer tumbler lock is often incorrectly referred to as a disc tumbler lock, which uses an entirely different mechanism.
